Climate adaptation requires not only strong public policies and local action, but also greater involvement from the private sector. In a new TiCCA4DANU interview, Miha Škrokov, Project Manager – Circular Economy at ANTEJA ECG (Slovenia), shares his perspective on why private sector investment will be essential for turning climate adaptation plans into concrete action.
In the interview, Miha explains that climate change is already having a direct impact on industries such as agriculture. Rising droughts, floods, and other climate-related pressures are forcing businesses to adapt to changing conditions and to explore new technologies and solutions, including precision agriculture, in order to maintain stable supply chains and strengthen resilience.
At the same time, he highlights the growing importance of private finance in climate adaptation. Banks and investors are increasingly required to assess climate risks linked to their investments and to better understand how these risks affect long-term business viability. This creates an important opportunity to involve private capital more actively in adaptation efforts.
A key point raised in the discussion is the current financing gap. While many climate adaptation measures across Europe are supported through EU and national funding, implementation often slows down once project-based funding ends. Strengthening the role of private investment can help bridge this gap and support the continuation and scaling of adaptation measures beyond the lifetime of publicly funded projects.
This is where collaboration becomes especially important. As highlighted in the interview, municipalities, regional development agencies, financial actors, and businesses all have a role to play in helping climate adaptation solutions reach the ground. By connecting innovation, investment, and local implementation, stronger and more sustainable adaptation pathways can be built across the Danube Region.
The interview reflects one of the important themes addressed by TiCCA4DANU – Transformative Innovation for Climate Change Adaptation in the Danube Region: how to mobilise the right actors, tools, and investments to support long-term climate resilience and real implementation.
