The EU Strategy for the Danube Region Turns 15: Strengthening Cooperation for a Resilient Future

In 2026, the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) celebrates its 15-years anniversary, marking an important milestone in European macro-regional cooperation. Over the past decade and a half, the Strategy has provided a shared framework for countries and regions along the Danube to address common challenges, strengthen collaboration, and promote sustainable development across one of Europe’s most diverse macro-regions.

Launched in 2011, the EUSDR was designed to improve coordination between national, regional, and local actors while encouraging cross-border cooperation. Since then, it has evolved into a long-term strategic platform that supports connectivity, environmental protection, economic development, and social cohesion throughout the Danube Region. By bringing together governments, research institutions, businesses, and civil society, the Strategy continues to transform shared challenges into shared opportunities under its guiding principle of “Prosperity through Diversity.”

As climate change increasingly affects cities and regions across Europe, cooperation within the Danube macro-region becomes even more important. Addressing climate risks requires new approaches that combine policy innovation, scientific knowledge, and regional collaboration.

The TiCCA4DANU project contributes to these efforts as a Danube Strategy Flagship, supporting the Strategy’s broader objectives through a focus on climate change adaptation and transformative innovation policy

Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, TiCCA4DANU works with four pilot city-regions across the Danube Region to design and test new approaches for climate resilience. The project brings together researchers, innovation agencies, regional authorities, and policy experts to develop Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) frameworks that help cities and regions respond to climate challenges in a systemic and inclusive way.

By combining regional innovation strategies with climate adaptation policies, TiCCA4DANU supports the development of place-based solutions tailored to local needs, capacities, and resources. Through collaborative workshops, research activities, and policy experimentation, the project aims to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems while accelerating climate-resilient transformation.

As a Danube Strategy Flagship, TiCCA4DANU directly contributes to the goals of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region by fostering cross-border cooperation, knowledge exchange, and policy innovation. The project supports cities and regions in developing new governance models, strengthening regional collaboration, and advancing climate adaptation measures that can be replicated across the macro-region.

Looking ahead, initiatives like TiCCA4DANU highlight how macro-regional cooperation can play a key role in tackling complex challenges such as climate change. By connecting innovation, policy experimentation, and regional collaboration, the project contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable Danube Region for the years to come.
