What is Transformational Adaptation?

Transformational adaptation means making fundamental, long-term changes to how societies, economies, and environments respond to climate change. Instead of only addressing immediate risks, it focuses on tackling the underlying causes of vulnerability and preparing systems for future climate conditions.

It goes beyond small, incremental improvements by promoting systemic change across sectors, governance levels, and communities. This can include rethinking land use, infrastructure, policies, and economic activities, while ensuring that adaptation actions are inclusive, forward-looking, and sustainable.

By supporting cooperation, innovation, and long-term planning, transformational adaptation helps build stronger and more climate-resilient regions and communities, especially for those most at risk.
